Universal Immunization Program (UIP) in India has been launched by the Government in
1985. Largest in terms of vaccines used, beneficiaries reached, immunization
sessions held; it is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Initially
launched in 1978 as Expanded Programme of Immunization (EPI), it was
rechristened as UIP in 1985. The reach initially was limited, mostly urban.
Various vaccines come under it like vaccines of polio, measles, hepatitis, BCG,
DPT, to name a few.
It fulfills various objectives like increasing immunization
covering, developing an authentic health system, improving the quality of
services to achieving self-sufficiency in the production of vaccines.
